From Lapidary to Gems 'N' Jewels

Here we are at old shows. The first one with Greg is at Canberra for a major NSW Show known as a Gemkhana where many Rock Hounds from all over New South Wales, both professional and amateur descend on a different town each year. So this means that we have to have plenty of stock to show everyone. This event is usually held on the Labor Day Weekend in October so there will be plenty of people coming and going for the entire time.
The second pic is of me looking a little tired for wear as I am trying to set up for this weekend show at Carlingford, Sydney. As this is only on for two days, there will most likely only be people coming from the Sydney surrounds, as far south as Wollongong and as far north as Taree. For this show, we had mostly jewellery, gemstones and some small hand tools. All of this had yet to get out.
So as you can see there is quite a difference from that time to this time. Back then we sold many lapidary machinery, books, carving & jewellery making equipment, beading supplies, findings, loose gemstones and much more. When we first started we were known as Greg's Showcase which started way back in 1967! We travelled up north as far as North Cairns in Queensland at least twice a year and as far south as Hobart in Tasmania once a year. We have travelled to every Capital city in this Country except for Darwin. However we have been to Alice Springs.
Every year we would travel around the country to attend the annual Gemboree where thousands of rockhounds would all come to display their collections, fossick, swap (both yarns and rocks!) compete in rock cutting, jewellery making and enamelling competitions. With many more wonderful events over the entire Easter Weekend. Some of the most memorable times were the dressing up on Easter Sunday for the Fancy dress competition. Later came the Gemboree Princess competition and much more. Then some time in the late 1990's Greg & Sandy moved to yet another shop at Glenfield and this is when Gems 'N' Jewels was borne!Here we are at our Current location in Campbelltown
